The Unhurried Rhythm of Baja
See that look in Huff’s eye? Every adventure starts like this. That quiet excitement just beneath the surface. He comes alive when we travel—heart open, senses tuned in, ready to take it all in.
We joined our travel crew—Sean and Kaleigh—and new friends Johnny and Brittney for a few sun-soaked days at Hotel Indigo in Puerta Cortés, an oasis community nestled between the desert and the brilliant blue waters of the Sea of Cortez in La Paz, México.
Home to a world-class marina, signature golf course, and breathtaking coastal views, Puerta Cortés offered the perfect blend of relaxation, adventure, and unforgettable cuisine. From the moment we arrived, the staff made everything feel effortless.
We flew out of the Tijuana International Airport. Thanks to the CBX bridge—which connects directly from San Diego to the terminal—you get all the convenience of an international flight without the long border wait. It’s fast, easy, and honestly kind of genius. A quick walk across the bridge, a smooth check-in process, and you're off on your adventure before most people have made it through security elsewhere. Once you try it, it's hard to go back.
After landing in La Paz, we grabbed a ride to Hotel Indigo—and immediately felt like we were on vacation. Any hotel that greets you with welcome drinks is my kind of place. The vibe was relaxed and colorful, with friendly staff and expansive views. We dropped our bags, sipped our drinks, and settled into that sweet first-day rhythm where everything slows down and the real world starts to fade.
We couldn’t wait to get into that pool. There’s nothing better than that first dip—the kind that washes off the stress of life and resets everything. Total bliss.
Mornings began slowly with coffee and empanadas from DoceCuarenta or brunch at Barco Restaurant, followed by lazy afternoons at the stunning outdoor pool, where sweeping ocean views set the tone for pure ease.
We split our time between Hotel Indigo’s outdoor pool and Puerto Beach Club, just steps away from each other. Between the poolside views and the beachside vibes, we had the best of both worlds—lazy mornings lounging in the sun, and afternoons with our toes in the sand and drinks in hand.
If you’re craving fine dining in La Paz, SeaSide Bar Wine & Grill is an absolute must. This Mediterranean–international fusion restaurant sits perched above the most stunning view of the entire bay.
From the moment we sat down, we knew we were in for something special. The food was unbelievably fresh and beautifully prepared—every bite felt like a celebration. And the sunset? Unmatched. Golden light spilling across the water, casting the whole bay in soft, glowing color. Dinner with a view has never felt more romantic.
EL CORTÉS
GOLF CLUB
Right next to Cardón Restaurant, there’s a private, members-only bar tucked inside El Cortés Golf Club. Members store their personal collections of top-shelf liquor in glass-fronted cabinets, each one locked and labeled—like a library of spirits.
The guys had enjoyed a drink there earlier after their round and wanted to bring us back before dinner to take in the views. We somehow managed to charm our way into this members-only club, and wow, was it worth it—sweeping views of the Sea of Cortés, soft music drifting through the space, and that golden hour light that makes everything feel like a postcard.
PLAYA
BALANDRA
We explored the iconic turquoise waters of Balandra, a beach that isn’t just famous—it’s protected. To preserve its pristine beauty, entry is restricted to two different time slots with a maximum of 450 visitors per session.
We hired a driver to drop us off and pick us up, which made things easy. When we arrived, we were just a few cars from the front of the line—good thing, because a long line quickly formed behind us.
Once inside, it was easy to see why the restrictions are in place—Balandra is stunning. Shallow, crystal-clear turquoise water stretches out across a vast, calm bay, framed by rolling desert hills and rust-colored cliffs. It’s less of a beach and more of a natural sanctuary.
The water is so shallow you can wade out for what feels like forever, the soft white sand warm underfoot. We wandered across the bay to explore the rocky outcroppings and hidden coves, pausing often just to take it all in.
There’s a quiet here that feels sacred—no loud music, no trash, just the sound of gentle waves and the occasional horse in the distance. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and forget what time it is. And honestly, that’s exactly what we did.
After Balandra, we discovered Azotea, a rooftop restaurant in La Paz. We settled in with a couple of expertly crafted cocktails, the kind that feel like they were made just for sipping while watching the sun dip toward the horizon.
From up here, the view of the Sea of Cortés was absolutely breathtaking—endless and calm. The combination of the vibrant cocktails, the warm breeze, and the sweeping panorama made it one of those moments you wish could last forever.
One of our favorite things to do in La Paz is wander the Malecón, tasting our way through the city with bold, fresh flavors from spots like Taco Fish and Quemadero.
We fell in love with La Paz on our first trip—the unhurried rhythm of Baja, the lazy days by the pool, the incredible seafood, and sunsets over the Sea of Cortés. It was a trip that left us full, relaxed, and already dreaming of the next visit, a perfect reminder of why slowing down can feel so good.
